Nic Bradley ’20 is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering at Mercer University, set to graduate in the Spring. Following this, he plans to continue his education at Mercer with a Master’s Degree in Engineering Management. Nic kindly took the time to answer a few questions about his college journey.
How did your time at Habersham affect your college experience?
I believe that Habersham did an excellent job of building my abilities in time management and study skills, as well as strengthening my faith and independence. At college I was confident enough to branch out into new experiences, and I believe that Habersham played a significant role in shaping me into the individual I am today.
How did you decide on your major, and the field you want to work in?
Whilst still enrolled as a high school student, I did not really know what I wanted my college and career path to look like. I had many different topics that interested me, but I was never really able to narrow my options down. I knew that I was eager to pursue a technical field that had prevalence in industrial settings, and this led me to Mechanical Engineering. I was more inclined to pursue this branch over other disciplines of engineering due to its versatility. Since starting college I have been able to take classes in Electricity, Thermodynamics, Fluids, and Computer Science to name a few. This degree has enabled me to learn a multitude of practices in the technical world, and has provided me the knowledge to pursue a wide variety of career fields.
As for my career, I am going to be working as a Structural Engineer upon graduation. I have been an intern at a Structural firm for about a year now, and I have found just about every aspect of the field fascinating. I have worked on a variety of projects including schools, warehouse additions, bridges, and even beach houses! I enjoy the unique nature of every project that the firm undertakes, learning valuable practices and trade skills along the way.
What are your plans for the future?
I am beginning to study for the F.E. exam this summer, where I will earn my E.I.T. (Engineer In Training) certification. After working in the Structural field for at least five years, my ultimate goal will be to achieve the certification of P.E., S.E. (Professional Engineer, Structural). This will enable me to sign off on projects and gain some decision-making privileges in the industry, thus widening my horizons.
Do you have any advice for Habersham students heading off to college?
I would definitely say that preparing in advance is most important, no matter what year you are in. Begin thinking about what education and career you would like to pursue. I would also suggest building strong study habits and working on independence. The transition from high school to college is quite a large leap, but being well-prepared will enable you to face the potential challenges that come with harder classes and living independently.
